How to properly care for and store your Belowzero skiwear

So pflegst und lagerst du Deine Belowzero-Skibekleidung richtig

The ski season is over, and your skiwear has seen you through biting temperatures, snow flurries, and changeable conditions. Proper storage is crucial to ensuring your ski jacket, ski pants, and base layers retain their high quality and functionality. Simply hanging your functional clothing in the closet risks it losing its water-repellent, breathable, and insulating properties.

Here you will learn how to optimally store your Belowzero skiwear – from checking for damage to washing, care and proper storage.

1. Check and repair damage

Before washing and storing your ski jacket and pants for the summer, you should inspect them carefully. Areas that are subject to particular wear and tear, such as seams, zippers, and knees, can be easily repaired with patches or by a professional outdoor tailor.

The longevity of Belowzero products is a central part of our philosophy. Instead of buying new, repair is worthwhile in order to conserve resources and reduce the burden on the environment.

2. Check the care label: Your guide to proper care

Before storing your ski clothing, it's important to thoroughly clean your technical garments. Sweat, dirt, and residue from care products can otherwise impair breathability and waterproofing.

The care label in your ski jacket or ski pants is your most important guide. It gives you precise instructions on how to wash, dry, and care for your Belowzero clothing.

Our products are made from high-quality materials such as Sorona® Aura – an innovative, lightweight, and insulating filling material. With proper care, it remains durable and functional.

3. How to wash ski clothing correctly

To keep your ski clothing optimally protected, follow these steps:

  • Preparation : Empty all pockets, close zippers and Velcro fasteners, and turn the clothing inside out to protect the material.
  • Detergent : Use a liquid detergent for technical clothing, but not fabric softener. This could impair the breathable membrane of your clothing.
  • Washing cycle : Select a gentle program with a maximum temperature of 30°C and a low spin speed (maximum 800 revolutions per minute).
  • Waterproofing : Add a wash-in waterproofing treatment to the fabric softener compartment to renew the water-repellent properties during washing. Repeat this process when you feel the waterproofing is diminishing to ensure optimal functionality.

4. Drying your ski clothing

Proper drying after washing is crucial to maintain shape and function:

  • Tumble dryer : Check if your skiwear is suitable for tumble drying (symbol on the label, e.g., a square with a circle inside, indicating tumble dryer safety). Turn the garment right side out again. Use the gentle cycle at a low temperature (max. 60°C), for approximately 20 minutes, and optionally add tennis balls to evenly fluff fillings like Sorona® Aura.
  • Air drying : Hang your clothes inside out on a hanger in a well-ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight or radiators, as these can damage the materials.

5. Renew the impregnation

You can easily test whether your ski jacket and ski pants are still sufficiently waterproofed: Hold the clothing under running water. If the water beads up on the surface, the water-repellent layer is intact. However, if the water soaks in, it's time to refresh the waterproofing. There are two methods available for this:

  • Wash-in waterproofing : Add the waterproofing treatment directly to the fabric softener compartment during washing. To reactivate the waterproofing, it is recommended to tumble dry your clothes for 10 to 15 minutes at a low temperature. This will optimally renew the water-repellent properties.
  • Spray-on waterproofing : Spray the clean, dry garment evenly. You can then reactivate the waterproofing in the dryer at a low temperature. This method is particularly suitable for targeted treatment of heavily used areas.

5. Stain removal: How to keep your clothes spotless

  • Grease stains : Dab liquid soap onto the stain, leave it to work for 30 minutes and then rinse the clothing with warm water.
  • Stubborn stains : Use a special stain remover for functional fabrics. Test it on an inconspicuous area first.

6. The right storage location for ski clothing

Before storing, ski clothing must be freshly cleaned and completely dry to avoid dirt, odors and mold, and to ensure that the ski clothing survives the summer in perfect condition.

Not every place is suitable for storing skiwear. To protect the high-quality materials, it should be stored in a dry, cool, and dark place.

Suitable storage locations:

  • A well-ventilated wardrobe
  • A breathable garment bag or a cotton bag to protect against dust
  • Storage boxes that can be securely closed so that mites and moths have no chance.

Unsuitable storage locations:

  • Damp basements or garages, as the moisture there can cause mold.
  • Attics with large temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight are unsuitable, as mold and material fatigue are a risk.

Whether you hang or fold your ski and functional clothing depends on the space available to you.

  • Hanging: Ideal to avoid creases and pressure marks. If possible, use wide hangers to relieve pressure on the shoulders and prevent deformation.
  • Folding: If hanging is not possible, fold the clothing loosely and avoid tight creases. A breathable storage bag, a large fabric cover, or a storage box will protect against dust and prevent compression.

Further protective measures:

  • Preventing moths and mold: A small sachet of lavender or cedarwood can help keep moths away.
  • Dust protection: Breathable garment bags or cotton cloths protect against dust deposits.
  • Waterproofing before the new season: Right after summer, you can re-waterproof your ski jacket and ski pants to refresh their water-repellent properties.

Conclusion: With the right care, ready for any adventure

With proper care, your Belowzero skiwear will remain functional for many seasons and always look like new. Protect your gear, enjoy the summer to the fullest, and be perfectly prepared for the next winter with many great adventures on the slopes!
