City Trip Packing List: Multi-functional clothing instead of specialized gear

Anyone who has ever embarked on a weekend trip to Bern, Vienna, or Barcelona with hand luggage knows the problem: the suitcase is small, the itinerary is packed. The right packing list for a city trip often determines travel comfort more than the destination itself, and this is where a second look at multifunctional clothing pays off. What provides weather protection and freedom of movement in the mountains works just as well on cobblestones, if you know what to look for.

Last weekend, someone from our team spontaneously visited Lucerne. Saturday morning across the Chapel Bridge, a mid-morning snack at the weekly market by the river, a short boat trip on Lake Lucerne in the afternoon, and because the weather was good, a spontaneous dip in the cool Reuss river. In the evening, a glass of wine in one of the old town's alleyways. A program for which a suitcase full of special equipment would have been completely excessive and for which a single basic outfit would have been too little.

That's exactly the point of city trips. Little luggage, lots of activities, and rarely control over the weather. The solution isn't to pack a separate piece of clothing for every situation, but rather versatile pieces that can be combined. A base layer that keeps you warm under your jacket and also works when worn alone for a museum visit. A mid-layer for cool evenings that packs down small when the sun comes out. Shoes that are just as good on cobblestones as they are by the riverbank.

The material makes the biggest difference here. Breathable, quick-drying fibers like merino are practical for a city trip because you rarely have the opportunity to wash something overnight or dry it in the sun. Spilled beer, a rain shower, a spon

The packing list for a long weekend

  • 2 to 3 functional shirts, breathable and odor-neutral
  • 1 light mid-layer for cool evenings
  • 1 versatile pair of trousers, comfortable enough for long walks, understated enough for dinner
  • Shoes that are equally suitable for walking and in the grass
  • A small, weather-resistant bag for daily essentials, for example our Zinal bag with space for a water bottle, wallet, and rain protection

Conclusion

A city trip demands no less functionality than a mountain tour, just a different kind. Those who opt for combinable pieces instead of specialized equipment can manage with less luggage and are still prepared for rain, long walks, and a spontaneous dip in the Reuss. That's exactly what we develop our collections for: for everyday life, the city, and everything in between.
